Humanitarian News

In our news articles we share timely reports exploring new developments in humanitarian policy and response, usually shorter than 1,000 words. Normally they are focused on a specific conflict or post-conflict situation, a disaster or refugee or other displacement situation or a human rights issue (1,200-1,400 words).

In 2024, nearly 300 million people will need urgent humanitarian assistance and protection due to prolonged conflicts, extreme climate events and other drivers. These are the largest numbers of people ever needing help and will likely continue to rise, despite the world’s commitment to ‘leave no one behind’.

Some humanitarian emergencies are more complex than others. These ‘forgotten’ crises often involve an acute emergency layered over ongoing instability. Examples include the 1.2 million people in the Sahel region who live with acute food insecurity, and the 2.8 million internally displaced as a result of the droughts and cyclones that hit Honduras in 2021.

In many of these situations, information is scarce and misinformation abounds. This can make it difficult for aid agencies to respond effectively and for people to understand how they can improve their lives. In some cases, this can also contribute to the stigma of a crisis and prevent people from seeking help. We are committed to supporting our partners in providing accurate and up-to-date information, including through this website, and through a range of other channels.
